Tumeric is the fad new SuperFood.... and for good reason

If you love Superfoods, you will adore Turmeric!

Turmeric

Turmeric is not often used in Western culture but its popularity is very quickly growing, and for very good reason. In the East, its medicinal properties have been known for centuries and it's used in Indian and Chineese medicine too.

So what is all of the fuss with Turmeric?

Does it deserve its place in our SuperFood hall of fame? Let's find out and take a look at 7 reasons for adding Turmeric to your diet…

Turmeric can lower your cholesterol levels

The ingredient in turmeric that is responsible for its powerful benefits to health is curcumin. Curcumin reduces your cholesterol level in three very powerful ways. First, it reduces the time that cholesterol spends in the blood stream. Second, it stops the oxidation of LDL cholesterol due to its antioxidant properties and third, it helps to boost the efficiency of LDL cholesterol by increasing the receptors. All of which leads to considerably improved cardiovascular health.

Reduce the pain from (and the spread of) arthritis

During laboratory tests, the curcumin found in turmeric was found to be as effective as traditional anti-inflammatory drug for joint stiffness. Adding turmeric to your diet plan can have a major impact on the quality of your life. Additionally, the antioxidant qualities found in curcumin can help to wipe out free radicals from the body. Free radicals are very troublesome for people with arthritis because they cause damage to cell membranes which is one of the main causes of joint pain.

Turmeric can help you to retain healthy thyroid function

Thyroid problems are really common in todays society and can give rise to all kinds of issues, including weight gain, dry skin, thinning hair, numbness or tingling in the hands brittle nails, and even constipation. Manganese is a vital mineral that's essential for proper thyroid function. Turmeric is packed with Manganese and helps you to make a substantial step towards a healthy and better functioning thyroid. Given the number of symptoms that are brought on by an incorrectly functioning thyroid, its a very good idea for you health, well-being and future medical bills to include turmeric to your diet plan.

Reduces inflammation and pain

When compared to traditional medical anti-inflammatories, curcumin wins hands down. The compounds that lead to pain during inflammation are called mediators, and they come in packs! Most traditional anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs only target two or three mediators but curcumin targets dozens! The result… more effective, organic and total pain release, and non of the horrible side affects associated with standard drugs!

(Very possibly) Improves your memory and helps make you smarter!

A food that may be able to make you wise ? I doubt much else can make a food more worthy of the esteemed rank of 'SuperFood' than its potential to improve your intelligence.

Curcumin enhances brain function and decreases the risk of brain disease by enhancing the neurotrophic factor. As we grow, neurons build new connections and our capacity to learn and remember more information increases. The growth hormone that supports this process is called the brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Decreased levels of this hormone are linked to many common brain disorders, such as Alzheimers and depression.

Curcumin increases BDNF levels, which can help our brains do what they are intended to do… grow, understand more things and make us smarter, although more research is needed to demonstrate that we actually do become more intelligent. An increase of BDNF could also halt, and quite possibly even reverse, the affects of many age-related brain functioning complications.

Helps to prevent, and possible even treat, cancer

During clinical tests on animals, curcumin was shown to decrease metastasis (the spread of cancer) decrease angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels in tumors) and even kill cancerous cells. During a different study (this time on humans) curcumin lowered colon lesions in 44 adult males by 40% over a period of 30 days. Although this study was not on men that were actually suffering from cancer, colon lesions can become cancerous, so it's a considerable indication that curcumin may help prevent cancer.
